The Ruwanweli Maha Seya, also known as the Great Stupa, is an iconic Buddhist monument in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. Erected by King Dutugemunu in the 2nd century B.C., it is celebrated for its architectural grandeur and spiritual significance, symbolizing the spread of Buddhism across Sri Lanka. This ancient stupa is adorned with fine carvings and houses sacred relics, drawing pilgrims and tourists alike. Its dome represents the vastness of the Buddha's teachings, while the surrounding veneration area underscores the community's collective devotion. Thuparamaya

Thuparamaya is considered the first stupa built in Sri Lanka after the introduction of Buddhism. Constructed by King Devanampiyatissa in the 3rd century BC, it is located in the sacred city of Anuradhapura. Thuparamaya houses the collarbone of the Buddha, making it a revered site among Buddhists. The stupa is known for its unique shape, resembling a bell, and stands as a significant monument reflecting the establishment of Buddhism in the island. Surrounded by a stone pillar colonnade, it serves as a symbol of the religion's long-standing heritage in Sri Lanka, drawing pilgrims and historians alike.

Mihintale

Mihintale is celebrated as the cradle of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, located near Anuradhapura. It is revered as the site where, in the 3rd century BC, King Devanampiyatissa met Mahinda Thera, who introduced him to Buddhism. This encounter marked the beginning of the island's conversion to Buddhism and led to the establishment of Mihintale as a major religious sanctuary. The area is a complex of religious monuments, including stupas, meditation caves, and reservoirs, set amidst a serene, wooded landscape. Climbing its grand staircase of 1,840 steps offers a spiritual journey and breathtaking views, making it a pivotal pilgrimage site and a testament to the enduring legacy of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. Thus, “Mahinda” was the Indian name, which in Sinhalé, became “Mihindu.” In Sinhala Mihin-Thalé literally means the “plateau of Mihindu”

Climate/Weather:

In Anuradhapura, the climate is tropical with a clear division between the dry and wet seasons. Average daytime temperatures fluctuate from about 27°C to 34°C, with March and April being the hottest months. Nighttime temperatures are cooler, generally between 21°C and 25°C throughout the year. The wet season peaks in October, November, and December, with October being the rainiest month, receiving up to 215mm of rainfall. In contrast, June is the driest month, with as little as 44mm of rain. Humidity is high year-round, exceeding 70%, with November being particularly humid. Despite this, the region enjoys considerable sunshine, especially from February to April, where there can be up to 8.6 hours of sunshine per day.
