Nagadeepa Temple
This sacred temple is one of the oldest Buddhist sites in Sri Lanka, believed to have been visited by Lord Buddha himself. - Notes: Involves a boat ride from the mainland to the island. The boat ride is not the most comfortable.
Kadurugoda Temple
The Kadurugoda Temples, or Kantarodai Viharaya, are a cluster of small Buddhist stupas found in Jaffna. Their origin dates back over two millennia, making them a significant archaeological site. Unlike the predominantly Hindu culture in Jaffna, these stupas highlight the historical presence of Buddhism in the region. Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil
Jaffna is home to many vibrant and colorful Kovils, with the Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil being the most prestigious. Established in the 15th century, it stands as a symbol of Hindu faith and Tamil culture. The Kovil's elaborate architecture, rituals, and annual festival that attracts thousands of devotees make it a focal point for those seeking to immerse themselves in local religious practices and traditions. Visitors are captivated by the spiritual ambiance, intricate carvings, and the sheer scale of devotion displayed.
- What to wear: Any comfortable clothing. Wearing white is recommended, covering up to Elbows and Knee length. Men have to go bear-chested as a respect to the Hindu gods.
- When to visit: Can visit anytime of the year. Open daily from 07.00 AM to 07.30 PM
- Notes: No photography is allowed inside the Kovil.
When to visit:
Jaffna is a year-round destination if you visit Sri Lanka. Monsoonal rains might affect the rains/sunny days but still all visits can be done when visiting Jaffna.
Climate/Weather:
Jaffna experiences a dry and warm climate, with temperatures often ranging between 26°C to 33°C. The region sees its rainfall mainly from October to December, during the North-East monsoon, making the rest of the year predominantly dry and sunny, ideal for exploring.
