Polonnaruwa, the medieval capital of Sri Lanka, flourished from the 11th to the 13th century. It succeeded Anuradhapura, offering strategic advantages against invasions. Distinguished from other kingdoms by its sophisticated irrigation systems, Polonnaruwa supported a thriving agricultural economy. The city showcases advanced urban planning and monumental architecture, symbolizing the zenith of Sinhalese craftsmanship. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it embodies the transition of Sinhalese culture and Buddhism, with iconic structures like the Gal Vihara. Polonnaruwa's decline was hastened by invasions and a shift of the capital to more defensible locations.
