Let’s simplify and make this more easy to understand

So imagine a destination (in this case Sri Lanka), being a nice tropical island with a “best season” for all 12 months or 365 days, the whole year.

That’s right. Sri Lanka is that Destination. Like the catchphrase we came up with after carefully deciding what Sri Lanka is really,

It’s a Story to Live – a Lifestyle to Experience.

What can you actually do in Sri Lanka?

This is the main question to anyone those who don’t know Sri Lanka. Sure, that’s exactly why Meshaun Journeys exist too. To guide you to book the most amazing Holidays in Sri Lanka. Here’s a few of our posts that you can read leisurely to understand more.

So what is the
Best time to Visit Sri Lanka?

If you ask many Travel Agents worldwide and with their expertise, they will often say, Best Months to visit Sri Lanka are between November to April. Many would say that the Best climate is during this season, the best beach stays, the most sunny climate and so man reasons.

Even the Google or AI searches now would just scrape these blog posts and articles and say December, January, February and so on. Is that true?

As a Tour Operator from Sri Lanka, promoting Sri Lanka with the experience of literally living here, helping thousands of tourists travel to Sri Lanka, we disagree.

Best Time to visit Sri Lanka is WHEN YOU CAN.

You see, many know Sri Lanka as a beach destination. It’s true, being a tropical island in the Indian Ocean, we have the Beach and the Coast all around the country. But that’s not everything Sri Lanka is though.

What many travellers think or imagine Sri Lanka is that it’s more like The Maldives – a beach destination.

Sri Lanka is much more than that. It has the Wildlife – which some say that is best apart from Africa, Nature – literally more than 20 National Parks and so many mountains and forest areas, History and Culture – standing tall on this one with over 2,500 years of recorded history, Food – which is my personal favorite and literally so amazing and delicious.

Now let’s break it one by one on how to decide to visit Sri Lanka and now we will show you how you can visit Sri Lanka all 365 days and also make sure you get the best out of your travel experiences too.

What are the main concerns to decide the Best Time to visit Sri Lanka?

Your Budget in mind to spend in Sri Lanka

Do you need a proper Beach stay in Sri Lanka?

Why you want to visit Sri Lanka? The main highlight.

Best time to visit Sri Lanka based on your spending Budget

Now let’s see the average Hotel/Resort prices and room rates for the Year. This helps you

Now, you can notice that the months of December & January are the most expensive months to visit Sri Lanka. More specifically, the period from 20th December to 10th January is the Top Peak.

Almost all the hotels of Sri Lanka has the peak supplements, the Christmas celebrations, New Year celebrations, compulsory Meals and Gala parties, and some hotels have Minimum Stays (especially the beach hotels) as well.

Whether it’s the West Coast or the East Coast or the South, hotels and resorts have the most expensive stays during this season.

Best time to visit Sri Lanka based on the Beach Stays

If you are visiting Sri Lanka for the beaches, then it’s a completely different Best Time to Visit concept.

Based on the Monsoons and the results of it – the sea conditions and the rain that follows, Sri Lanka has 2 Seasons. To each Season, there’s a preferable Coast.

  • Winter Season (November to April) = South and West Coasts
  • Summer Season (May to October) = East Coast

This is one reason to visit Sri Lanka, because if you plan the travels right, you can easily enjoy a Quality beach time throughout the year, no matter when you travel.

What happens during the Monsoon seasons are, it’s windy, rains occur suddenly, the seas are rough and not suitable for sea-baths and boat rides even.

Winter Season (November to April) : Beaches such as Kalpitiya, Negombo, Bentota, Ahungalla, Hikkaduwa, Galle, Unawatuna, Mirissa, Weligama, Hiriketiya, Tangalle has the high demand as these beaches have more calmer seas and less rain compared to the rest of the year. This is one of the main reasons why many say that the Winter Season (November to April) is the best time to visit Sri Lanka.

Summer Season (May to October) : Beaches such as Trincomalee, Pasikudah, Kalkudah, Arugam Bay are in demand because of the calmer seas, better weather with less rains and sunny days.

Another experience that follows this Monsoon or the Winter/Summer difference is the Whale & Dolphin watching boat rides and excursions.

During months from November to April, the Whale and Dolphin watching is popular among the areas such as Kalpitiya and Mirissa.

During the months from May to October, it’s popular in Trincomalee, which is in the East Coast.

Because of the calmer seas, the sunny weather, safety reasons, this is how the Whale & Dolphin watching excursions happen.

Same goes for the Surfing as well. It’s also mainly dependent on the Monsoons.

Best time to visit Sri Lanka based on the main highlight or experience

Okay, by now you have a better idea why some people recommend months or seasons to travel to Sri Lanka. But that actually depends on Why You want to Visit Sri Lanka.

If you are visiting Sri Lanka for the Excursions such as Whale & Dolphin Watching, Surfing, Beach stays:

During months from November to April, West and South Coasts.

During the months from May to October, East Coast

Because of the calmer seas, the sunny weather, safety reasons, this is how the experiences spread throughout the Year.

Another reason why people visit Sri Lanka is to participate in the unique events and the experiences. Are few notable experiences that are specific to a time-of-the-year or months are:

Similarly, there are many events that highlight Sri Lanka but depends on the year or the time of the year you visit Sri Lanka.

What about other parts of Sri Lanka?

That’s another concern for many. Can they do the visits or the activities or experiences they planned in exploring Sri Lanka.

The most simplest answer is YES!

The main reason why people try to differenciate the Seasons are based on the Sea Conditions. Next is the Rains. Sri Lanka being a tropical country, we get rain every month. You can refer the blog post about Month by Month Sri Lanka Climate for a better idea.

You will notice that Sri Lanka being a tropical country gets rainfall every month. There are no definitive sunny days or rainy days. There’s cloudy days, sunny days, rainy days, windy days, all types of days that are mostly unpredictable – other than snow – which we don’t have in Sri Lanka.

So every experiences or place you want to visit, whether it’s the famous locations such as the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy, the Train Ride in the Hills, the Safari at Yala National Park, or a cooking session with a local – all these activities can be done throughout the year without any issue.

Rain might sometimes make a bit of inconvinience but this is very minor because for many years, tourists from all parts of the world visit Sri Lanka and still enjoy the country to the maximum.

So it’s safe to say, if you are thinking about visiting Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Yala, Dambulla or any place, you can easily do so and this helps you in not-considering this to decide the Best Time to visit Sri Lanka.
