Whale & Dolphin watching
Mirissa, on Sri Lanka's south coast, is a world-renowned hotspot for whale and dolphin watching. The warm waters here attract a spectacular array of cetaceans. The majestic blue whale, the largest animal on Earth, is the star attraction. You may also encounter Bryde's whales, sperm whales, and even the elusive killer whale (orca). Pods of playful dolphins, including spinner, bottlenose, and Risso's dolphins, are frequent sights, leaping and frolicking alongside boats. Whale watching season in Mirissa runs from November to April, offering the best chances for sightings. Choose a responsible tour operator that prioritizes ethical wildlife viewing practices for an unforgettable and respectful encounter with these magnificent creatures.

Surfing
Mirissa offers a welcoming environment for beginner surfers. The beach itself has gentle waves ideal for learning the basics, and nearby Weligama is even better with a long, consistent beach break. Several Mirissa-based surf schools offer lessons, board rentals, and a safe environment to practice. Expect to start with beach instruction, then progress to paddling and catching waves in the shallows. Always stay between the lifeguard flags, be mindful of the ocean's power, and most importantly, have fun!

Coconut Tree Hill
Coconut Tree Hill in Mirissa is a must-visit for its iconic beauty and picture-perfect scenery. This small, palm-covered hill provides a stunning panoramic view of the Indian Ocean and the golden sands of Mirissa Beach. It's the ideal place to snap those Instagram-worthy shots, especially during sunrise or sunset when the sky bursts with color. Easily accessible just off the main road in Mirissa, a short walk or tuk-tuk ride followed by a quick climb will bring you to the breathtaking viewpoint. While Coconut Tree Hill is on private land, it's usually open to visitors. Remember to be respectful of the surroundings and other people enjoying the view. The path to the top can be a little slippery, so wear sensible shoes for the climb.
